George Kendall describes the blasting from a safe, 600 ft. away:
The initial sound was a double blast of an air horn: the two minute warning.
Next the Blaster yelled out: "Fire in the hole!" and I heard a crack (the shotgun
shell primer going off beside me, igniting the fuse cord. The fuse cord burns at
a rate of 22,500 ft. a second. So in a blink of an eye, I could see flashes of light
at the other end of the fuse cord, 600 ft away. These were the little blasters in
the fuse cord at each junction igniting the explosives deep under ground.
It sounded like a zipper or a ripping noise. Then there was a low frequency
thundering sound (I could feel it through my feet and legs). Then in less
than a second, the earth just rose up 10 ft. in the blast area, surrounded by dust,
smoke and some flying debris, leaving a large pile of gray, crushed stones as
shown in the picture.
